Clewer

Clewer is now just a small parish of Windsor but is actually the oldest part of town, predating even the castle. In fact the Crown used to pay a rental to clewer parish for the rental of the land upon which Windsor Castle stands.

St Andrew's church provides a web log (see below) to tell parishoners what is going on in Clewer.

In the Churchyard the grave of Owen George Allum can be found. He was just 17 years old when he set sail for New York to meet up with his father on the maiden voyage of the Titanic.

Beneath a simple cross the inscription reads

Owen George Allum
Shipwrecked on the Titanic
And Drowned at Sea April 14th 1912
Aged 17 Years

died on the titanic

In 1912 Owen had been a gardener living in Southall, London, He had grown up at 7 Gerrold Villas, Vansittart Road, Windsor. He was travelling in third class He had paid £8 1 shilling for ticket number 1223.

George's body was one of the few recovered by the Mackay-Bennett and taken to Boston on 4 May 1912. It was then sent home to Windsor and laid to rest at Clewer Parish Church on 22 May 1912.
