Charles and Camilla, the cursed Royal Wedding
In Early 2005, Windsor was the backdrop to an extraordinary series of events leading up to the marriage of Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles. The farcical series of gaffes, blunders, and cock-ups attained such a momentum of their own that many people (including some senior figures within the royal household) began to wonder wether the marriage was cursed. The diary below lists the events in the order they occured. See for yourself if you think there was a jinx on the Prince's wedding.
The year started with Prince Charles' son, Prince Harry having the good sense to dress in nazi regalia for a fancy-dress party. Naturally, these were plastered across the front page of every newspaper in the country.
Feb 10 Starts badly when a press leak of the story that Charles is to marry Camilla cannot be denied by the Royal Household.
14 February The press wheel out several constituational experts to say that the proposed royal marriage is unlawful under British law.
17 February Original Venue (Windsor Castle) has to be hurriedly changed to Windsor's Guildhall when someone realises that if a civil ceremony is held at the castle, any local resident is allowed to demand use of the same venue for a wedding for the following 12 months.
18th February Press decide to destroy Windsor Guildhall's reputation in a series of less than flattering articles and photos of crumbling masonry.
22 February The Queen announces she will not attend the civil ceremony. This is seen as snub to her own son.
10th March The whole 'princess consort' nonsense is delved into by press. It turns out that despite palace protestations, Camilla will be Queen in everything but name once Charles becomes king.
23rd March The Lord Chancellor has to put an end to the questions over the legality of the royal marriage, by making an official statement that wedding is actually lawful.
31st March On a Skiing trip photo call, Prince Charles gets annoyed by the press and mutters on about the 'bloody people' from the press to his sons. The entire conversation is recorded and aired on national television.
2nd April - Pope John paul Second Dies in Rome. A palace aide says the wedding will go ahead on friday, even if that clashes with the Pope's funeral.
3rd April Vatican annouces aFriday funeral and the Palace changes it's story, announcing a 24 hour delay of wedding.
4th April Security Breach 1- a break in at Windsor Castle.
4th April Daily Mail's headline is "CAN ANYTHING ELSE POSSIBLY GO WRONG?"
5th April Security Breach 2- The Sun newspaper successfully plants a hoax bomb inside Windsor Castle.
5th April Prince Ranier of Monaco Dies. It is not turning out to be an auspicious week for royalty.
8th April A sudden cold snap with heavy snow in Windsor.
8th April Rover, the last car manufacturer in UK closes with loss of 6000 jobs.
8th April Just 24 hours before the wedding Prince Charles becomes embroiled in yet more controversy by shaking hands with Zimbabwe's pariah President Robert Mugabe, at the Pope's funeral.
9th April - the Wedding day
Her Majesty the Queen reportedly delivers an extraordinary wedding day snub to Prince Charles and Camilla by refusing to appear in photographs with the couple, and then dissapearing early to watch the Grand National on TV!
