Eating out in Windsor

Good restaurants in Windsor? You bet! In fact Windsor is one of the best towns for food in Berkshire. Choose one of the following restaurant links to see what is available.

Afternoon Tea in Windsor

The Wren Hotel
The Wren on the Bridge does a good high class afternoon tea. The location makes it a great choice if you are bringing friends from out of town and want to show them a fun English experience. Only gripe was a surly waiter on one ocassion a few years ago but I haven't seen him there in a couple of years now.

Castle Hotel
For the full British luxury afternoon tea experience, the Castle Hotel on Windsor High Street is most definitely the place to go. It is definitely not a bargain price cuppa, but the comfort levels, high standards of service, and quality of the tea, sandwiches, scones and petit fours make it worth trying afternoon tea at the Castle Hotel.

The Drury House Restaurant
Windsor's oldest restaurant, The Drury House on Church Street (the little cobbled street opposite the great big gated entrance to the castle) also does a decent cream tea in a very atmospheric setting. Listed as the former home of Nell Gwynne (actress and Mistress to King Charles II).

Patisserie Valerie
This cafe/cake shop opened in 2011 in King Edward's Court, next door to the Gourmet Burger Kitchen. Despite my abject dissapointment at the lack of french macaroons, this place is serving up a storm of lovely french cakes, creamy delights and as a spot for an indulgent tea with friends, it really is great.

Daniel's Department Store
They have a little cafe offering frent patisserie favourites. The location is .. well inside a department store, so not everyone's cup of tea, but hooray, they sell proper parisan macaroons.

Evening Meals in Windsor

Italian and Pizza restaurants in Windsor

Carluccio's
Carluccios offers both a deli and restaurant. I know it is a chain, but Antonio is a great cook and has made sure that the restaurants that feature his name live up to his standards. If you want a real treat forget normal coffee and order a 'bicerin' instead. This coffee, chocolate and cream drink is just heavenly. They give you three little jugs (one of each of the ingredients) and you get to pour them into the cup yourself, so you can adjust it to your own personal taste. We really liked that.

Don Beni's
Don Beni's used to be on the High Street but has moved to Eton across the river. The pizzas are stone baked in a really hot oven and the portions are large. This is authentic italian pizza and the wine list is fully of fruity italian reds.

Wehave a couple of chain pizza places in Windsor including

Pizza Express (map)

Zizi's a few doors down which has a child-friendly policy. Zizi's is a chain of well priced italian style eateries that generally deliver well on both food and atmosphere.

Indian restaurants in Windsor

Mango Lounge at 9 Datchet Road is easy to find as it is close to Riverside station. They have a good interior but the cooking is what this restaurant is all about. The Head Chef Ashwani Kumar does some very classy cooking with modern takes on Indian classics. Mango Lounge really is in a class of its own (and is a strong contender for our 2011 Windsor restaurant of the year award). Each dish was in some way unique, usually through unexpected flavour combinations or the skillful spice blends being employed. Presentation was also excellent. The final bill came to about 20% more than you might expect from a typical Indian meal in a local restaurant, but the quality of the food warranted it and more besides. If you have never eaten here before, I urge you to try the Mango Lounge. I am sure you will like it as much as I did. The ironically named 'prawn cocktail' starter is a work of genius.- Chris November 2011

Red Rose
Curry by royal appointment (yup, the Queen gets her take-aways from Windsor) is available from the Red Rose Tandoori (map). The menu and decor are old school indian dining.

Viceroy

"Lovely curry, good service. I was very happy with the meal and will go again." - 2011

The Viceroy (map) on St Leonards Rd (at the bottom of Peascod Street) does a great selection of fresh, well spiced Indian food. The staff are great, the prices are reasonable, the decor is light and airy and the Duck Jalfrezi and Dhal are both winners every time.
Reviewer - Nicola March 2011

The Spice Route (map) on the High Street is doing interesting asian dishes at good prices (for Windsor). Spice Route is hidden away halfway down a big flight of stone steps so access is poor, but once inside, the decor is very pleasing and the welcome is as warm as the food.

Thai restaurants in Windsor

Thai Square (map) on the high street near the theatre has been described by our reviewers as the hippest thai in this lovely Berkshire town.

Thai Place at 12 Thames Street Windsor (01753 842186) in the same building where the Thai Castle used to be. The new restaurant has a funky red, black and white interior". We ate there once in 2010 and were not impressed.

Japanese restaurants in Windsor

Wagamamas
A branch of Wagamamas noodle bar has opened in the basement of the Harte and Garter. This is a great lunchtime eatery where you get healthy delicious noodle soups, teriyaki and other 'street food' style dishes. Seating is solid wood only, no cushions, so it can be a bit hard on the bottom.

Mediterranean restaurants in Windsor

The Green Olive Tapas bar at 10 High Street Windsor is one of a small chain offering greek meze style dishes. Not overly expensive.

Latinos
Latinos is a Greek taverna right behind the Guildhall at 3 Church Lane. Latinos (map) is a family run restaurant offering standard Taverna fare. Live Bouzouki music on a Friday and Saturday night and a bit of dancing and plate smashing can make is a great party night out.

La Botega
This tapas bar can be found on the corner of Peascod St and Oxford Road East. We have eaten here three times and each time have been impressed by the welcome and the food. They have done a great job of bringing interesting tasty tapas to Windsor. We felt the food was first class and the prices thoroughly reasonable. The wine list is surprisingly good and the seafood dishes were cooked just right. Another one we are happy to visit regularly.

La Tasca
A chain tapas eaterie. In Feb 2009 I had a horribly disappointing lunch. Although the location (inside the station) is fine and the staff were friendly and attentive, the flavours were inauthentic and bordering on downright nasty, the textures were greasy and despite using a half price voucher I still felt that I had overpaid. They announced a major menu revamp in 2011 so maybe things have improved, but some friends went recently and didn't think it was up to much.

Anglo-French restaurants in Windsor

Both the big hotels on the High Street (The Harte and Garter (map) and the Castle Hotel (map) do anglo-french cuisine to a high standard.

Stroks (map) restaurant is attached to the Christopher Wren hotel on the bridge. The atmosphere is formal and a bit imposing. The wine cellar is excellent but the food is expensive. Stroks is considered good for theatre goers who want to make an upmarket night of it.

Monty's Riverside Restaurant (map) on Windsor Bridge , Windsor, SL4 6BT
My husband and I ate at Monty's about a year ago; the food was excellent and the service even better. Not cheap by any means but worth a visit for a special occasion.

Vanilla Bar (map) on Goswell Hill is very cool. A real saturday night out venue for the younger generation. Food is best eaten elsewhere.

The House on the Bridge Riverside Restaurant
71a High Street, Eton, caters to business lunches during the week, but does an excellent (if somewhat overpriced) sunday lunch. Dress code. - 01753 860914

Bel and the Dragon is on the Windsor side of the bridge.
The food is usually good although not cheap. We went back to the Bel and Dragon (October 2008) and the food was back up to top class standards (after a rather disappointing meal there the previous summer) . Nicola and I are once again pleased to recommend Bel and the Dragon to anybody. I was particularly pleased with the 'posh chicken' which, while being a simple roast chicken and chips was cooked to perfection. Nicola wanted me to also praise their delicious puddings. We went with friends and chose four separate deserts. Each was as good as the next. My one very minor niggle was that they sold only one English Ale, which seems a bit of a betrayal to a building that housed its own micro brewery for most of its long history.

Greene Oak

The Greene Oak
Oakley Green
SL4 5UW

We are delighted to say that we have been to the Greene Oak nine times and each time have left delighted. The menu itself is enough to get the palate tingling and the aromas that waft from the kitchen only raise the anticipation. Then the food arrives and within a mouthful, smiles all round the table tell you that they have succeeded again.

We went for a meal deal (2 courses for £15.00) at lunchtime. I ordered a ceasar salad that arrived with a perfectly poached egg. The lettuce was crisp and tasty, with plenty of parmisan.

The staff at the Greene Oak have a truly excellent manner with their guests, with a polite informality that is truly warm and welcoming. You genuinely feel that they want you in their restaurant. Portion sizes have never been less than generous and they try to offer free-range & organic produce for a number of dishes. The wine list at the Greene Oak is always full of real gems. The decor is lovely, the toilets are delightfully clean and comfortable (hey these things matter!) and in summer the outdoor eating area is a great place to spend a long afternoon with friends.

Cafe Rouge
High street chain of french styled cafes. To be honest the food hasn't been bad when I have eated there, but it wasn't ever inspiring and I cannot really recommend it, except for quick lunches when nothing better is available. Easy to find at the top of station approach.

North African restaurants in Windsor

We are lucky to have not one, but two North African eateries and both are great.

Al Fassia on St Leonards Road has rightly been receiving rave reviews for decades. Pure Moroccan flavours, a very welcoming host (we love you Mustafa) and great value come together in this simple but very fine restaurant. They have a 'party' area upstairs that can be booked for groups. The food has never been anything other than top notch and we have eaten there at least ten times over the last few years. My sister comes to visit us on ocassion and generally asks 'can we go back to that brilliant Moroccan restaurant?'.

The new upstart is "Ayoush" on Eton High Street. Beautifully decorated, warm and welcoming this is a hip venue featuring great cocktails a lovely interior of dark wood and north african colours and some really delicious Moroccan and Egyptian cuisine. In December 2011 We ate here at lunchtime and had two excellent courses of great Tangines and Couscous dishes for a stunningly cheap ten pounds per person. We were absolutely delighted with every aspect of food, service and atmosphere, but are looking forward to next summer because the 'outdoor' area at the back of the restaurant looks amazing and we want to give that a try for ourselves.

Chinese restaurants in Windsor

Nell Gwynn's
Tucked round the back of town at number 6 Church Street, It is worth hunting down this small eaterie. We were really impressed by their 'Hot Pot' type dishes such as their Sea Spice Aubergine. The bill is tiny but the portions are large. We also regularly order takeaways from Nell Gwynns. Highly Recommended! We last enjoyed food from here in December 2011 and once more were very happy with the flavours, textures, portion sizes and were delighted with the bill.

Hong Kong
For Chinese food there is an excellent little place called the Hong Kong (map) on Alexandra Rd. It is worth hunting down their Crispy Duck which is always wonderful. The staff are lovely and it really is high quality chinese food.

The Yangtze
The Yangtze chinese restaurant in Windsor offers friendly service and excellent value for money (eat as much as you like buffet) to the theatre crowd as it is just a few doors away from the theatre royal.

The Jasmine
The Jasmine at 35 Thames Street is directly next door to the Yangtze but with a completely different atmosphere. The jasmine offers calm colours, heavy linens and silverware and a hushed almost religious atmosphere that sometimes feels perfect and other times feels a little stilted. The food is generally excellent and the bill is appropriately balanced.

Mexican restaurants in Windsor

Charley's Horse
If you fancy mexican food, then why not visit Charley's Horse under the arches at Goswell Hill which advertises itself (somewhat curiously) as the second oldest mexican restaurant in England.

Burger, Grill and Steakhouse restaurants in Windsor

Gourmet Burger Kitchen
Surprisingly good burgers from a New Zealand chain who have set up a few outlets in the UK

Windsor Grill
Owned by tv chef Anthony Worrell Thomspon who also owns the deli a few doors up the road.

Nandos
Chain of chicken eateries. A popular choice for families with children.

Cattle Grid
Excellent Burgers starting from £7.50 but the onion 'strips' left me feeling queasy. When you ask for tap water it arrives in a grolsch style flip lidded bottle which is a nice touch. Because it is hidden around the back of the station it is rarely full.

Fish and Seafood Restaurants restaurants in Windsor

Cafe de la Mer
Windsor's new Seafood Bar, Cafe de la Mer offers a wide range of Seafood dishes inspired by flavour and simplicity in a stylish and relaxed atmoshphere. The restaurant is on the high street close to the Guildhall. Fish is responsibly sourced from the United Kingdom, Ireland and French waters.

Loch Fyne
In December 2008 we visited the new branch of the Loch Fyne chain (formerly the Crispin Pub, three miles from town on the Ascot road (A332) at the junction with the B3034). This was a lunchtime trip and overall we were moderately impressed. The atmosphere was nice and airy, quite unlike the dark old pub it had once been. My Gravadlax starter was good enough if perhaps a little sweet for my personal taste. Nicola's Lobster Bisque was great. We both enjoyed eating thses dishes and looked forward to our mains.Service was pleasant enough although perhaps a little inattentive; It took them a couple of minutes to realise that customers who order Lobster Bisque generally prefer to eat it with a spoon.

My whole baked seabass was definitely the highlight of the meal. A generous size of fish, cooked to perfection and served simply with new potatoes. The accompanying veg were ever so slighlty underdone however. Nic's pan fried squid was cooked very well although the portion size was a little disappointing. The bill was pleasantly manageable due to the pre-christmas special offer of 2 courses for £15.00. We agreed that although there were a few minor failings we would be happy to return to Loch Fyne for lunch sometime soon.

Restaurants Further Afield

Of course, if you don't like any of that, there is always Eton, just across the river or Bray village, just down the road where you can find two Michelin Starred Restaurants and a new Italian!

Riverside Brasserie
Phil Boardman is the head chef and gets great reviews. The nice touch at the Riverside is that when you book they reserve both an inside AND an outside table for you so if the weather is good you can sit by the waters edge while you eat.

A little further still, the Black Boys Inn in Hurley is now (officially) one of the UK's best gastropubs.

The Vanilla Pod in Marlow is considered worth a drive by Windsor residents.

The Hand and Flowers (also marlow) is now famously the first ever pub to be awarded 2 Michelin Stars. Chef Tom Kerridge produces some really amazing cooking but on the whole keeps prices sensible. Book in advance!

Or perhaps you are just looking for a take away? We have takeaways in Windsor too.
