The Greene Oak - Reviewed
The Greene Oak in Oakley green had been open in its new guise for about eight weeks when we first visited, giving them enough time to get the teething problems sorted.
The staff were very welcoming to guests and the new decor is light years away from the old pub. The greene Oak is now a restaurant first and a pub second. The result is delightfully clean, tasteful and atmospheric (Farrow and Ball paint job). All the refurbishment has been done to a very high standard with a mixture of stone flagging and wooden floors.
The menu was pretty exciting too. A gastropub affair with a few interesting twists. Seafood features well which I always take to be a good sign of things to come.
As we ordered, the food for the next table along arrived and I began to salivate. It was great to see that the kitchen has thought long and hard about not just the smell and taste, but also the look of the dishes.
We ordered wine at a reasonable price and waited.
Some olive bread was offered to us, and we sat and ate the bread and drank the wine and enjoyed the experience. And waited..
And at this point usually a review descends into a rant about poor service, but something different happened to us. Our waitress came to the table and told us she had made a mistake. She had failed to put our food order through to the kitchen. She told us she was very sorry and knew it was probably very stressful for us, but if we could wait another 15 minutes the meal would arrive and we would not pay a penny for it.
When people treat you decently, you should treat them decently back, so we agreed, and 15 minutes later were treated to perfectly cooked elegant dishes. The taste was really exceptional, reminding me of the Hinds Head in Bray on its best days.
The sweets and coffee were great too and we left very happy with our dinner.
We went back the following week (it really is that good) and this time, the food arrived very quickly.
