Local Politics in Windsor
The local Member of Parliament is Adam Afriyie (Conservative) who won the election on 5th May 2005 with 49.5% of the popular vote. Mr Afriyie is the Conservative party's first ever black member of parliament.
Local issues in Windsor Early 2008- The expansion plans for Heathrow airport are bitterly opposed by locals.
The windsor arts centre has closed down. This has upset lots of people who use the venue regularly.
The biggest surprise of the election of 2005 was the poor showing of the Green Party who polled just 2.5% of votes cast. This is despite the proximity of Heathrow airport and a prominent anti-noise pollution campaign run in recent years by local campaigners.
Other local issues in people's minds are the proposal for a change of planning consent to allow the building of a mosque in Vale Road, Clewer. This proposal was rejected by the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead council in August 2005 on environmental grounds. In November this decision was overturned on appeal. The West Windsor Residents Association told us that they were deeply saddened by this example of central government overriding the wishes of local people.
Windsor town centre is currently undergoing redevelopment and the building of a new budget hotel in the heart of town upset many hoteliers in the area who have managed to keep prices quite high for a while now.
