History was made on Tuesday when Michael D Higgins the Irish President came to Windsor for an official state visit.

Her Majesty met Mr and Mrs Higgins at a temporary pavilion on Datchet Road, just past the Riverside Station. They got into the Australian State Coach (popular at the palace because it is fitted with electric windows, heating and hydraulic stabilisers) and drove up the High Street and along Park Street to the Long Walk where they entered into the Castle.

The soldiers, marching bands and mounted troops gave an impressive display of pomp and ceremony, waqtched by many thousands of visitors.
