Eton based Swan rescue charity ‘Swan Lifeline’ was overwhelmed this week by the task of cleaning oil from 68 local swans.

On Monday 27th February 2012 oil leaked into the River Thames somewhere between The Leisure centre and Eton Bridge. The source of the spill has not yet been identified but investigations are ongoing.

The Environment Agency and Thames Water are both involved in cleaning the riverside.

Meanwhile some of the swans may have ingested oil and so the staff at swan lifeline are busy taking care of the animals and monitoring their recovery.

Only last year the disease necrotic enteritis clamed the lives of many swans in Windsor so this additional blow to the local swan population is particularly unwelcome.
